The Three Pillars of Lasting Fitness Transformation
According to the mainstream fitness industry, having the “wrong” strategy is entirely to blame for subpar results. The fitness industry spreads this lie to convince you to buy the latest supplements, workout programs, and diet plans. They’re constantly selling you the “latest and greatest” strategy, despite the fact that the fundamentals of fat loss are simple and unchanging.
After helping thousands of vegans to get into the best shape of their lives, I know that strategy is incredibly important. You simply cannot achieve lasting fitness success without the right strategy. But if you haven’t achieved your goals, then the issue is not that you haven’t found the right strategy - though that is likely part of it. Your issue is that the right strategy is only one piece of the puzzle.
There are two other pieces of the puzzle that are absolutely vital to your vegan fat shredding success: mindset and accountability. I call Strategy, Mindset, and Accountability the Three Pillars of Lasting Fitness Transformation. I call them the “Three Pillars” because you must have all three to achieve lasting fitness transformation.
I emphasize the word “lasting” because you can get decent short-term results with the right strategy alone. But the main problem with the “weight loss” industry isn’t that people don’t lose weight, it’s that they don’t keep the weight off. That’s where mindset and accountability come in. With all Three Pillars, you can quickly achieve and maintain long-term results.
That’s why the Three Pillars of Lasting Fitness Transformation form the foundation of our Vegan Superhero Academy coaching program. We do everything in our power to ensure our clients achieve lasting transformation, not just short-term results.
We already covered the ideal dieting and training Strategy for shredding fat as quickly and efficiently as possible, which is the Vegan Fat Loss Formula. Now it's time to cover the two other Pillars of Lasting Fitness Transformation: Mindset and Accountability.
The Most Important Part of Your Transformation is Your Mind
“If you correct your mind, the rest of your life will fall into place.” - Lao Tzu
During a recent trip to Nashville, I stayed at an Airbnb. My host and I were chatting one night and she asked what I did for work. I told her that I was an online vegan fitness coach. When I share this with people, I usually get a mix of responses like, “Wow, that’s a really target niche!” or “You’re vegan?!”
But her immediate response was unusual and caught me off guard. She asked me, “What is your number one fitness tip?” Oddly enough, I don’t think I have ever been asked that question, so I was surprised to hear my response fly out of my mouth.
“To master your body, you must first master your mind.”
Obviously expecting to hear my secret diet hack or workout tip, she seemed to be more surprised by my response than I was.
“Transformation is far more mental and emotional than people think,” I elaborated. I explained how the fitness industry focuses on strategy, which is not the most challenging or crucial piece of the puzzle for most people. People know that they need to eat healthy foods and move their bodies. Implementing the right strategy does take work, but it’s not the major barrier to physical transformation. The major barrier is a person’s mindset.
As we've covered, you can get results without nailing your mindset. But these results tend to be short-lived. How often have you heard stories about people who undergo incredible physical transformation, only to revert back to their old ways a few months later? It happens a lot. And it’s usually due to focusing on strategy without first building the right mindset.
Without building new beliefs and habits to reinforce the identity of a healthy and fit person, lasting transformation is impossible. That’s why I firmly believe that your internal transformation (your mindset) will have a much greater impact on your life than your external transformation ever will. You might think that sounds crazy, but it’s true. Let me explain.
Your transformation is like an iceberg. About 90% of an iceberg’s volume (and mass) is underwater. Amazing, right?! Only 10% of an iceberg is visible above the water’s surface. I believe the same phenomenon applies to your fitness transformation. Your physical changes - the visible results that people around you can see - make up only about 10% of your transformation in terms of total life impact.
The remaining 90% of your transformation occurs internally. Your internal transformation requires shedding your current identity and breaking down your current beliefs about who you are and what’s possible for your life. Your internal transformation requires a fundamental mindset shift, which will allow for your new identity and belief structure to develop. This is how you build a new identity that will positively serve your future self.
I know that YOU have the power and ability to define who you want to be. You just have to decide to truly commit to change. There’s a side to you that’s happy, healthy, confident, successful, and fit. It’s all within you. You just have to unleash it.
You can begin the transition by defining who you want to be. By creating a detailed description of the person you aim to become and then working hard to become that person. A person with the mind, body, and confidence that you dream to have. I call this future version of yourself your Ultimate Identity.
The process of setting your Ultimate Identity and then working every day to become that person is how you strengthen your mindset, build self-confidence, and achieve meaningful fitness goals that truly matter to YOU.
But there is still one more piece of the puzzle that we're missing. You MUST build support and accountability around yourself as you work to achieve your Ultimate Identity.
Build A Support System Around Your Ultimate Identity
“Accountability is the glue that ties commitment to the result.” - Bob Proctor
I consider myself to be driven and committed. I am mentally strong. I rarely make excuses. I bust my ass in the gym. I work 12+ hours every day to spread my message and help more people. Yet I do not trust myself to always stay on track.
I know the very real temptation of binging on Netflix, skipping the gym, sleeping in late, and eating too many foods that don’t serve my health. Goals take time, hard work, perseverance, and commitment to achieve. And results often do not come as quickly as you hope. Because of this, it’s easy to lose motivation and give up. But everything changes when you leverage an accountability system.
I surround myself with mentors and accountability partners. I invest in fitness and business coaches. I participate in a handful of elite entrepreneurial mastermind groups. I post my workouts in our Vegan Superhero Academy community group every day. I publicly share my goals online for the world to see. I do all of this because I know that the more accountability I establish in my life, the easier it will be to maintain my footing on my path to achieving my Ultimate Identity. Complacency is cunning. The temptation to relax and take it easy never goes away. I know that the only way I’m going to create the life of my dreams is to create a fail-proof support system around me.
I don’t care how successful or iron-willed you think you are. You absolutely MUST establish massive accountability in your life to ensure you maintain positive momentum towards your goals every day. You absolutely need someone, preferably multiple people, to hold you accountable along your fitness journey. Seek out a mentor or coach who can offer the accountability, support, and expert knowledge you need to succeed as quickly and efficiently as possible. I would also highly encourage you to join an accountability group and find an accountability partner. The more accountability you have, the better!
When you hold yourself accountable to someone, you leverage the power of social expectations. Knowing that someone else is watching you is a powerful motivator. When you tell your boss you will get the proposal done by the end of the week, you’re going to do it. The expectation alone is enough motivation to make you fully commit and get it done. However, when you tell yourself - and no one else - that you will start a new gym routine, write a book, eat healthier, or start that side business you’ve been dreaming about, then you are significantly less likely to actually follow through. It’s just too easy to make excuses to yourself.
Surround yourself with people who hold you accountable and call you out on your excuses. Remember, Accountability is one of the Three Pillars of Lasting Fitness Transformation and absolutely crucial to your long-term success. If you chop off one leg on a three-legged stool, you won’t be able to balance for very long.
